Scratching an Itch in Mice with New Small Molecule Inhibitors (2 of 6) (IMAGE)
Caption
Sensory nerves innervating the skin are grouped together in a structure next to the spinal cord called the dorsal root ganglia. In this micrograph of a dorsal root ganglion, the nerves involved in detecting itch are labeled green, while nerves involved in sensing other stimuli including, pain, temperature, and touch, are labeled magenta. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Jul. 10, 2019, issue of Science Translational Medicine, published by AAAS. The paper, by H.J. Solinski at National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, NIH in Bethesda, MD; and colleagues was titled, 'Inhibition of natriuretic peptide receptor 1 reduces itch in mice.'
