Dr. Nicklas Pisias, a professor emeritus at Oregon State University, is the 2018 recipient of the Maurice Ewing Medal, sponsored jointly by the US Navy and the American Geophysical Union. Pisias helped create the field of paleoceanography -- the study of the ocean's history via sediment analysis, geochemistry, isotopic dating and rigorous statistical methods in time-series analysis. His research was supported by the Office of Naval Research for many years.
