Hydrogel Formation During Phase Separation (IMAGE)
Caption
During phase separation, two mixed liquids separate, like oil and vinegar in a salad dressing. To get phase separation to occur, previous studies generally used extreme test-tube conditions (high concentrations of the protein or additives). The new UChicago study showed that normal levels of Pab1 could phase-separate -- if confronted with temperature or pH changes that accompany cell stress.
