a, Atoms from alkali vapors entering the light cage from all sides and interacting with the light of the central core mode. Vertical supports connect the light cage to a silicon chip. Reinforcement rings stabilize the freely suspended strand array. b, The on-chip light cage represents a novel photonic platform for integrated quantum optics as demonstrated in this work by measuring electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) visible by the strong transmission on the cesium D1 transition.
