University of Illinois Graduate Student Liana Acevedo-Siaca examined 14 diverse rice varieties to discover natural differences in how the plants harness light energy to fix carbon dioxide into food. In a recent study, she found a 117 percent difference in fluctuating light conditions, suggesting a new trait for breeder selection.
