Biochemist Margaret Stratton at UMass Amherst reports how her lab used advanced sequencing technology to determine all variants of a single protein/enzyme, CaMKII, in the hippocampus, the brain's memory center. There, CaMKII is required for learning and memory. Mutations contribute to conditions such as autism spectrum disorders and developmental disabilities, among others.
