Yonathan Zohar, professor of marine biotechnology at UMBC, stands with a tank in a land-based, sustainable aquaculture system at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology in Baltimore. UMBC and the Maryland Sea Grant are lead partners on a new $1.2 million grant from the National Oceanian and Atmospheric Administration to scale up these systems around the country. Land-based systems have the advantage of being sustainable; reducing transport costs, disease, and escape; and increasing yield. More U.S. aquaculture would also reduce the nation's growing seafood trade deficit, and help meet the rising global demand for seafood.
