Liviu Mirica, a chemist who specializes in the design of chemicals that contain metal ions, has a clever idea for speeding up trials of candidate Alzheimer's drugs. He would attach a molecule that binds to amyloid beta, one of the principal suspects in the disease, to Cu-64, a long lived radioactive isotope. This novel imaging agent would allow researchers to follow patients on a clinical trial over a period of days, giving them a movie rather than a snapshot of a candidate drug's activity.
