The UT Herbert College of Agriculture Biosystems Engineering Senior Design Team won first place in the G.B. Gunlogson Student Environmental Design Open Competition at the 2019 American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) international meeting in Boston in July. Designed by Matthew Johnsen (Oak Ridge, Tennessee), James Lewis (Knoxville, Tennessee), Christian Patterson (Chattanooga, Tennessee), and Ryan Watson (Brownsville, Tennessee), under the supervision of Dr. John Tyner and Mr. Andrew Sherfy, the award-winning device improves drainage in poorly-performing rain gardens by emulating hydraulic fracking used by the oil and gas industry. In this video UT Extension summer intern, Jenna Williams, demonstrates the operation of the device in a residential rain garden.
