Pigmented skin tumors can be a mixture of benign nevus (mole) cells and melanoma. Dr. Judson-Torres and his colleagues separated the two cell types and looked for differences in the networks of small RNAs between them. They were able to use this information to then detect melanoma cells in skin tumors even when the tumor contained predominantly benign cells
