Carthe and recover (IMAGE)
Caption
Top: During an oceanographic research cruise in the northern Gulf of Mexico, CARTHE scientists visually observe a front before releasing custom made, biodegradable, GPS-equipped drifters (inset) that track the movement of the ocean in the area. Bottom: The RECOVER team catches Mahi-mahi to attach pop-up satellite tags for an experiment to learn how oil impacts their survival in the wild. The tags provide information about migration patterns, habitat utilization (temperature and depth), and spawning behavior. The Rosenstiel School's R/V Walton Smith was outfitted with two large containment tanks where tagged fish recovered from angling and handling stress for 24 hours prior to being released. PhD student Jason Magnuson (inset) carefully collects mahi-mahi embryos in the lab.
