Certain Genes Essential for Proper Kidney Cell Function (IMAGE)
Caption
The image on the top right shows how a gene mutation disrupts the filtration structure (red and green) in the kidney cell of a Drosophila (fruit fly) compared to the control on the top left. The bottom image labeled TEM (on the right) shows the abnormal accumulation of "exocyst rods" near the cell membrane. The accumulation is caused by the gene mutation and interferes with normal kidney cell function.
