Model, simulation, and experiment. a) Sparks occur in the low-pressure region of standing shockwaves. The sparks are cut-off by the rapid increase in pressure of the standing shock surface (Mach Disk, red). b) Simulation of gas out flow speed shows that the speed drops at the shock surface leading to pile up of gas and increase in pressure. c) Experiment image showing electrical sparks below shock surface, upper sparks trace out shock surface.
