Ottawa researcher Dr. Dean Fergusson led a clinical trial that could save the blood system a lot of money. The trial shows that acutely ill premature babies who received fresher blood did not fare better than those who received the current standard of care. There was no difference between the two approaches with respect to major organ injury, mortality and infection. It's the first clinical trial of its kind to be conducted in humans and its findings run counter to observational studies that suggested possible harm from older blood.
