Results from a new method for analyzing disordered crystalline materials. Red sites occupied with high probability; blue sites largely unoccupied. Image shows sodium ions conform to zig-zag pattern when intercalated into vanadium oxide. Pattern repeats in all three dimensions over about 10 nm.
