This 2009 photograph shows the deposition of large quantities of dust from the deserts of the Colorado Plateau onto snowpack in the Colorado Rockies. A new University of Maryland-led study suggests that dust from Middle Eastern deserts settles on the Tibetan Plateau and Himalaya mountain range, accelerating snow melt and strengthening the summer monsoon season in India.
