Fishing Jump Before Ban (VIDEO)
Caption
The video captures the movement of ships from AIS data in and around the Phoenix Islands Protected Area, which is the area within the red-outlined region in the center. The first mention of a possible full closure came on Sept. 1, 2013. After August 2013, ship movements indicative to fishing activity remain unchanged in the control region of the study done by researchers at the University of Oregon and University of California, Santa Barbara. In the Phoenix Islands region, however, there was a surge in movement of ships showing patterns of fishing activity leading up to the January 2015 closure.
