地球大気の影響を受けない宇宙望遠鏡を用いて近赤外線で小惑星の観測を行い、地上の天文台からは観測できない波長2.7マイクロメートル付近の含水鉱物の存在を示す特徴を捉えることに成功した。含水鉱物が検出されたことで、小惑星の水の存在を直接的に検出したことになる。
