The Airways of the Mouse Lung (1 of 2) (IMAGE)
Caption
Lay caption: The airways of the mouse lung are lined by epithelial cells (green), some of which (red) produce an enzyme that clears away irritating chitin particles, protecting mouse from inflammatory lung disease, according to new research.
Technical caption: AMCase+ epithelial cells (in red) are found in the epithelium lining both larger proximal airways (i.e., bronchial airways, bright green) and within smaller distal (i.e., alveolar) epithelium. The cells secrete AMCase into the airway lumen, which is represented by the dark space in these images.
