This image illustrates the molecular mechanism how double-stranded HDO-antimiR silences the targeted microRNA within cells in comparison with the original single-stranded antimiR. These findings provide new insights into the biology of miRNA silencing and support the potential of this new class of molecules for use in treating miRNA-related diseases, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. "HDO-antimiR appears to have different mechanisms of action compared with the parent antimiR," states first-author Yoshioka. "Thus, given its heightened intracellular miRNA-silencing potency, HDO-antimiR and the techniques that we used to construct it represent a new direction for miRNA regulation research."
