A sink hole caused by melting permafrost is seen alongside the road in Goldstream Valley, about 10 miles outside of Fairbanks, Ala. University of Alaska Fairbanks professor Vladimir Romanovsky has received two grants from the National Science Foundation for his work on permafrost.
