Studying Ice Floes from the Skies

TanDEM-X (jointly operated by the German Aerospace Center -- DLR and Astrium) collected this ScanSAR mode image on Aug. 19, 2010 of the Arctic Ocean in an area at the edge of the ice pack where ice floes are impacted by contact with ocean swell. Larger ice floes are shown in green, newer pancake ice is purple, and open ocean water is blue, although melt ponds of some of the large floes also appears as blue. Because Arctic ice reflects a large amount of heat from the sun back into space, understanding its dynamics and evolution is an important area of research at the University of Miami and CSTARS.
