This illustration shows what the researchers found -- that a killer T cell (yellow) in the brain can target an infected or tumor cell (marked with A) and surrounding cells by releasing cytokines (dots) both within the gasket-like immunological synapse between the cells, and into the surrounding area via "leaks." These findings may help advance research on infections, tumors and autoimmune disease.
