Normally, when there is an insult to the lung -- dust, smoke -- lung tissue traffics a protein to the cell membrane to keep cells alive. In normal mice, left, that's apparent within 50 minutes; in mice with the Hermanksy-Pudlak-1 mutation, right, it's not.
