Except for formations such as this dolostone column of the Turkut Formation near the Khorbusonka River, the Siberian Arctic is flat. During his exploration of such formations, Virginia Tech geobiologist Shuhai Xiao and collaborators found many fossils in these ancient rocks. Xiao has received a Guggenheim fellowship to support his research.
