Model of left-right patterning in the larvacean embryo. It is well known that the dorsal-ventral axis shows 180? inversion between vertebrate and insect embryos in relation to the spatial pattern of BMP expression (purple). This larvacean can be regarded as an example of induction of 90? rotation for co-option of conventional BMP signaling to restrict neural gene expression on the left side.
