Goldfields and Butterfly (IMAGE)
Caption
An endangered bay checkerspot butterfly (Euphydryas editha bayensis) on a California goldfields (Lasthenia californica) flower within the experimental site at Coyote Ridge. This endangered butterfly relies exclusively on plants in the serpentine grasslands in the San Francisco Bay Area. Changes in the timing of seasonal events can lead to mismatches between species that depend on one another, such as plants that flower when their insect pollinators aren't around.
