E. Coli in the Mother Machine (VIDEO)
Caption
E. coli bacteria tagged with either red or green fluorescent molecules divide in an observation device called a 'mother machine.' The original 'mother cell' stays in the closed end of its own tube while its daughter cells are pushed up and swept away by a stream of nutrients. The device allows researchers to study individual cells growing and dividing over many generations.
