Lab-grown muscle was genetically engineered to flash with the calcium spikes that accompany muscle contraction. After being implanted into a mouse, the brightness and regularity of the flashes indicated how well the muscle was healing. The addition of macrophages (bottom row) to the engineered muscle resulted in greater functional recovery after 15 days.
