Fringe-Lipped Bat, Trachops cirrhosus (IMAGE)
Caption
The fringe-lipped bat, Trachops cirrhosus, feeds on frogs and uses frog mating calls to locate and identify its prey. In this photo, a fringe-lipped bat is consuming one of its preferred prey items, the túngara frog, Physalaemus pustulosus. A recent study by Page and Ryan in June 20 Current Biology has shown that bats can rapidly acquire novel foraging responses by observing the behavior of experienced conspecifics.
