Fire Prevalence (IMAGE) Princeton University Caption The map shows the average share of each 0.25 longitude by 0.25 latitude square that is burned annually from 1997 to 2004. The researchers' study site is located in south-central Brazil, where a regional hot spot in fire activity can be seen. Fires are more prevalent in other parts of the world, but the site's high-quality health, wind, and air pollution data made it attractive for study. The researchers' next project focuses on sub-Saharan Africa, which has lower data quality but much higher fire incidence, as the map shows.
