In a study that asked what factors make a dog more likely to be a successful guide dog, researchers from the University of Pennsylvania evaluated dogs' temperament before entering a training program. Dogs that were slower to bark upon being confronted with a novel object (in this case, a mechanical cat) were more likely to become guide dogs.
