Co-assembly, Heteromultivalency and Amyloid Binding (IMAGE)

Figure top: Through co-assembly, two lipid-type components form nano-particles in water which have a very large number of different contact points (shown in blue and green; left). As a result of many different points of contact interacting simultaneously with the protein (shown in violet), a particularly high degree of selectivity occurs ("heteromultivalency", right). Figure bottom: Via their contact points (green and blue), the nanoparticles bind the amyloids - here, specifically, amyloid-beta 42 (violet), and thus prevent their aggregation. Binding takes place via the corresponding contact points on the amyloid ("Y" and "K"; left).
