Chloroplasts (IMAGE)
Caption
These are chloroplasts visible in the cells of Plagiomnium affine, the many-fruited thyme moss. Photosynthesizing cyanobacteria invaded the earliest one-celled plants about 900 million years ago, conferring on plants the ability to convert sunlight into energy and setting the stage for the diversification of plants.
