Engineered capillaries developed at the UW Medicine Institute of Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine are 100 micrometers in size and have an hourglass shape. They are used to study how red blood cells flow single-file through microvessels and how diseases like malaria cause obstructions in the tiniest blood vessels in the body.
