The antimalaria drug artemether has been reported to generate insulin-producing beta cells from alpha cells in the pancreatic islet. But experiments by Sharon Lee, Mark Huising and colleagues at UC Davis did not show any alpha cells (green) transforming to beta cells (red) when islets were treated with artemether for 72 hours (lower right).
