The eelgrass Zostera marina is the first marine angiosperm to have its genome sequenced, as reported in the journal Nature on Jan. 27, 2016. European researchers, including a team from the U.S. Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute (DOE JGI), used a sample of Zostera marina taken from the Archipelago Sea off Finland.
