Keith Koper, director of the University of Utah Seismograph Stations, helped conduct a study in the journal Nature revealing that a magnitude-8.1 earthquake near Samoa and Tonga in 2009 was one of three powerful quakes that struck within a two-minute period. The quakes triggered tsunamis that killed 192 people.
