University of Utah biologists Erik Jorgensen and Christian Frøkjær-Jensen led a team that developed a way to delete or "knock out" genes in nematode worms. It's yet another tool developed at the University of Utah for studying human genes -- many of which have counterparts in worms and other animals. Knockout fruit flies and knockout mice also were developed at the University of Utah, with geneticist Mario Capecchi winning a 2007 Nobel Prize for his work on knockout mice.
