Black bears, like the one caught here by a camera trap in Michigan, have a surprisingly simple microbial ecosystem in their guts. Whereas many animals harbor diverse ecosystems that vary across the gut, the black bear's seems to be remarkably uniform. This raises some interesting questions and opportunities for researchers.
