Illustration of a 'hot Jupiter' orbiting a sun-like star. A hot Jupiter is a Jupiter-sized gas giant planet orbiting extremely close to its star, with a period of a few days compared to a year on Earth. Such planets can have atmospheric temperatures between about 1300 and 5000 Fahrenheit (or 700-3000 degree Celcius) which are ideal for detecting gaseous water vapor in their atmospheres through spectroscopy.
