Deccan Traps (IMAGE)
Caption
Satellite image of the Deccan Traps, a large igneous province in India, which erupted around 66 million years ago in the southern hemisphere. The subsequent fast northward motion India moved the Deccan Traps through the equatorial humid zone, leading to extensive weathering and atmospheric CO2 consumption, cooling the Earth. This process happened numerous times in the geological past whenever a continental large igneous province moved across the equator, helping to regulate Earth's climate.
