Surprising Role for RNAi in DNA Transcription (IMAGE)
Caption
A discovery by the Martienssen lab at CSHL demonstrates the critical role played by RNA interference (RNAi) -- an epigenetic mechanism -- in cellular quiescence. This in turn points to RNAi's essential role, as well, in the control of cellular transcription, the process in which the DNA of genes is copied into RNA messages that act as templates for protein synthesis. Here, an artist's depiction of how the enzyme RNA polymerase transcribes DNA.
