As the mouse moves around in a square arena (left), a sin­gle grid cell in the mouse's brain becomes active, or spikes, when the ani­mal arrives at par­tic­u­lar loca­tions in the arena (right). These loca­tions are arranged in a hexag­o­nal pat­tern. The red dots indi­cate the mouse's loca­tion in the arena when the grid cell fired.
