In panel 1, red PTEN RNA and blue RNA in its network are targeted and repressed by the same white and red candy microRNAs. If the blue RNAs increase (panel 2), they sequester more of the small microRNAs (panel 3), allowing more of the red PTEN RNA to survive and make the proteins that function as tumor suppressors.
