PcaV-Protocatechuate Complex (IMAGE) Brown University Caption Researchers from Brown University unlocked the genetic and molecular mechanisms that enable Streptomyces bacteria to break down lignin, a component of plant biomass. The lignin-derived compound protocatechuate binds to a genetic inhibitor called PcaV, enabling the bacteria to produce enzymes to break down other lignin-derived compounds.
