Animation of a Massive, Active Galaxy Shrouded in Dust (VIDEO)
Caption
An artist's impression of what a massive galaxy in the early universe might look like. Thick clouds of dust obscure most of the light, causing the galaxy to look dim and disorganized, very different from galaxies seen today. The galaxy is undergoing very active star formation, with stars being formed and exploding, lighting up the gas clouds. This effect is rendered here as a time-lapse. In real time, the galaxy would appear completely static as these processes occur over very long time scales.
