New NIH center broadens access to cryo-EM (IMAGE)
Caption
This illustration combines 3D images made with three advanced cryogenic optical and electron microscopy techniques that focus on clumps of protein in yeast cells. The protein clumps, which are of great interest to biomedical researchers, are tagged in green with fluorescent molecules. In the center we see how the clumps are situated among the yeast cell's other components. The images at right show the clumps in much higher resolution. A new NIH center at SLAC will assist and train biomedical researchers in the tools and skills needed to prepare extremely thin specimens that are frozen into a glassy state for cryo-electron tomography studies like this one, which combine several techniques with different levels of resolution to get a more complete and detailed picture.
