This is University of Utah researcher Mitchell Power with refrigerated sediment samples in a lab at the Natural History Museum of Utah. Charcoal in such sediments was the key evidence used in a new study by Powers and colleagues suggesting that the Little Ice Age – a period of global cooling – explains why there were fewer fires after about 1500.
