Creolefish (Paranthias colonus) school at the Galapagos Marine Reserve, an ocean area with restricted harvest. A new analysis of the effectiveness of marine protected areas worldwide by UMass Amherst marine ecologist Brian Cheng and colleagues suggests that reserves not only replenish target fish populations, they may also restore ecological functioning.
